John, the eldest of five children, has been a Woodbridge resident since 1960 when his father,
an Irish immigrant and steel plant foreman, and mother, the daughter of Irish immigrants,
bought their first and only home in Menlo Park Terrace. After graduation
from St. Cecelia's grammar school in Iselin and St. Thomas Aquinas High
School, class of 1976, John went on to earn a BA in Accounting from
Rutgers University and a Master's Degree in Finance from St. John's
University. John met his wife Tammy, now a Manger of Customer Financial Services for Bristol-Myers Squibb,
while they were both students at Rutgers University. They wed in
1983, and moved into a home in Iselin. They now live in Colonia with
their daughter, Erin, a senior at Bishop Ahr High School. A Certified Public Accountant, he worked for eight years for a large international
CPA firm, with both Fortune 500 companies and small local governments on its
client list. In 1988 John started his own CPA business, relocating it to downtown
Woodbridge 3 years later, where he was able to help hundreds of Woodbridge
residents with tax questions and financial concerns. John's competence and skill
caught the attention of then Mayor Jim McGreevey, who being fiscally
conservative, John was able to restore thoroughness and order to the town's
finances. In 2002, after Mayor Jim McGreevey was elected Governor of New Jersey, he asked John to come with him to Trenton, and to serve the citizens of New Jersey as their State Treasurer. In that position, John supervised 12 Divisions and 3,500 employees in various areas. While in office, he represented Governors McGreevey and Codey in
fiscal related matters with the Legislature, media, and constituent
advocacy groups. His business attraction and retention efforts helped
keep New Jersey moving forward and at the top of national rankings
for jobs and growth. In 2004, when state Senate President Richard
Codey took over as Acting Governor, he asked McCormac
to stay on as Treasurer. John was happy to stay and finish his term. Now, at 49 years old, with a 14 year history of community service behind him, John has come back to the town he was raised in, with the hopes of leading it with the same energy and vision that helped move both Woodbridge and the State of New Jersey forward. |
